Basic maps showing the entirety of the Royal National Park can be found online at www.cartoscope.com.au, under ‘Sutherland map’. The official NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service’s website (www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au) offers an interactive park map, with icons for different attractions within the park that can be clicked on for more information.
More detailed and specific maps of the park can be picked up at the Royal National Park Visitor Centre located on Lady Carrington Drive at Audley. Visitor centre staff can help make the most of your visit, providing information about attractions, walking tracks, any supplies you will need, and personal recommendations about directions and routes. The visitor centre is easily accessible by car, from Farnell Ave at Loftus, along Audley Rd to the Hacking River, or from McKell Ave at Waterfall, down Sir Bertram Stevens Drive. Alternatively, you can contact them by phone on 02 9542 0648. The visitor centre is open from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily, excluding Christmas Day.
Royal National Parks maps are also available on a real-time, GPS-based system for iPhones and iPads. Downloading the Avenza PDF Maps app, your real-time location while in the park will be plotted on the map. This allows users to measure area and distance, and drop place-mark pins. The app can be used without a network connection and doesn’t incur roaming charges.
Maps of walking trails through any of NSW’s national parks can be found on the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage website (www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks), under ‘Find facilities and activities’, then under ‘Walking tracks’. A search based on distance and difficulty will bring up a list of walking tracks, with interactive pop-up maps that provide more information about features when clicked on.
Probably the most helpful and practical website is the Wild Walks site (www.wildwalks.com), where more detailed and easily printable information can be found. Here you can search for bushwalking trails by national park. The Royal National Park page lists 56 different walks with information on location, distance, degree of difficulty and walking-time estimates. Each comes with a printable PDF of not only a trail map, but detailed, step-by-step directions, telling you exactly where to go and what to look for. The PDFs also include small photos of sights you’ll see along the track, weather and temperature graphs so you can plan the best time of year to go, and topographical graphs showing the altitudes you’ll reach.
