Lagoon & beach geography

The sandy shore acts as a natural barrier between the ocean and the freshwater lagoon — swimmable water on both sides is rare. The lagoon stays calm for young children; the ocean side can produce a close-out shore break when swell is up. Strong rips may appear at any time on the surf side, so supervise children and swim between flags when patrols are on.

Activities

  • Summer patrols — swim between flags on ocean side
  • Surfing when swell is up, fishing (NSW licence), snorkelling and lilo-ing on the lagoon
  • 3 km walk to Curracurrang Cove
  • Join the Coast Track north toward Bundeena or south toward Otford

Wildlife

Goannas are common around picnic areas. Do not feed goannas or any wildlife — it harms animals and creates aggressive behaviour. See more species on our wildlife guide.
